## Advisor Style & Mentorship
From my experience with different supervisors (four in total), he is the top supervisor for no doubt in the lowest moral category. Lucky that he works in academia with tenure, if not maybe the society has casted him away. Unless, he can become a mafia boss, where his skills can be put to use. 

He treats students in a highly discriminatory manner. In the first year, he judges whether a student is "Good" or "Bad" based on how well their personality matches his own, considering factors like background and communication skills. If he labels you negatively, every time you try to express an opinion, he'll say, "Shut up! You are at no level to talk to me.", or if you are found out learning a from a text book he will say "It is too late for you to learn now! You just do what I said!" However, if you're deemed "Good," he'll invest more time in you, engage in discussions, and allocate more resources to advance your career. So, it all comes down to luck. If you're judged "Bad," my advice is to quit right away. It will be utterly useless to work with him since he'll use you like a tool to support the "Good" students or do other menial tasks. In the end, he will even forbid you from having any ideas, which contradicts the very purpose of a PhD degree, just because he believes any idea coming from you is stupid. The funny thing is, if the same idea comes from another student or even another professor, he will receive it with excitement. For your information, most students will fall to the "Bad" category, while he will just pick one or two "Good" students from each batch. 

He also like to talk bad about another student or professors. Some people with a weak mindset may even believe that the student he talked bad about is actually really bad. What often happens is that he was bullying a student so much that we are too afraid that this extreme bullying will come to us. One time he even asked people forcefully on the group meeting to agree to him saying a student is stupid. Like "He is stupid, you agree RIGHT? I am asking you! You agree or NOT?". If you agreed, you will feel really bad by joining him in isolating the bullied student.

He has a very short temper, when someone performs poorly in weekly meetings, or he finds some mistake in the course content, or even a small mistake like sending a wrong email. He will call you to the office, and then depending on his mood he will blame you for 30-60 minutes until he gets tired. The most word he chooses is so personal and vulgar like stupid cunt (傻逼), idiot, trash, stupid, low IQ, and low EQ (Anyway his face is funny when he gets angry, so it is fine if you can hold your laugh. However, be careful of flying saliva since once he got excited blaming you, he cannot even control his saliva production). He can lose his temper anywhere, even in public place. So you need to treat him like a sensitive explosive that can explode at any time. 

Another thing is that he is extremely paranoid to the point that he often says other people are conspiring to attack him. He also like to do some manipulation for example, he will cherry-pick a certain number of people to write good review about him in a course or just make the course and grading easy to make the student happy, which in this case it makes the quality of the course lower compared to what has been teached in Mainland. The first course he teached was very bad, to the point that the student says the post-doc teach better than him.

## Expectations for PhD Students
He will push you to the point that you will feel yourself worthless. A ton of gaslighting like saying "If you cannot even do this, that is means you are STUPID", he will bully you even for small mistakes unrelated to research. For example when he ask you for help moving stuffs, then you shows some weaknesses like moving it too slow. He will bully you by saying "If you cannot even do this, how can you do research!" or "You have a very low IQ", etc. 

## Funding & Support
Funding is usually warranted for 4 years, but some people may not be able to get any extensions and may need to pay by him/herself. Some alumni even need to work as an RA with other professor to support his PhD. But it all depends on the availability and whether he wants to pay you or not.
Anyway, he think of goverment funding as his own money. One time he got angry at a student while saying "Your money comes from my POCKET!".

## Research
In academic, he also often do some academic dishonesty, as I heard from some people He even put his relative as an author on a paper, even though that relative contributes nothing. If this is true, this is so embarrasing as HKUST is said to be a world class university. With him inside, it feels like a trash class university instead. Also in terms of research, He often push for result even to the point of "massaging the data" to fit the line, we did a lot of "data cleaning". But I am also not sure whether this "data cleaning" is legal or not and will leave it to the expert to judge by seeing his publications. 

Anyways, he has lots of publication over many different fields. This doesn't means that he is an expert on different field, but it reflect he knows a lot of hot and new research topics. However, he always wanted to join fields without having any deep knowledge of them. He would only know a few keywords and spout them without any explanation. He would say things like, "You put this, you put that, then BOOM." To this day, I don't even know what he means by "BOOM." His ideas seemed so childish that he believed simply combining things would magically create something new. He knew many things on a surface level but lacked a deep understanding of the topics. Any expert in the subject would quickly recognize that he didn't know much, yet he acted as if he were the best in the field and considered other professors to be stupid. 

You can excel under him if you are already has a deep skill on the research topic that he is interested in. So, some amount of expertise is needed to work under him. A typical mistake would be that he give you an interesting topic but it is not within your expertise. In this case, at some point you may need an external help to lead you. He is mainly a managerial type of supervisor.

Publishing paper with him is quite difficult, since he is very perfectionist on figures. Sometimes you may need to changes the figures 20 times or more until he liked it. But then after sometime he will forget about your draft and get angry about the figure or other things like grammars, etc, repeating the process for another 20 times. Anyway if you want paper with him, it is recommended to pushes him using other professors as backup. 

## Lab Culture
During my time under his supervision, he encouraged us to work on weekends. Some people were even trash-talked if they didn't come in on weekends, with comments like, "Come on, that guy should work harder," or "You cannot expect to work 9 to 5 in academia." Anyway, he was a proponent of the 996 work schedule (9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week), which he justified by saying that he also worked hard on weekends. Which is quite fair. In fact there is a famous letter from a Caltech Professor Erick Carreira that was attached to our lab wall in order to "Motivate" us. 

But the moment I have over there is really unforgettable, together with life long friends. There is a saying that a hard times will always reveal true friends. You will also learn some life knowledge and would learn how to treat yourself and others better. But you will have an added bonus of a permanent mental trauma. But it is your choice at the end. I would recommend him just for the experience.

Anyway if you are applying for other professor then suddenly this guy offer you a letter of acceptance, there is big possibility that he stole your application letter from the academic office.

## Advisor Style & Mentorship
- Friendly and accessible. Has a very down-to-earth personality and is easy to talk to. We usually have group meetings every week but he is always available if you need one-on-one discussion. 
- Flexible. He does not really go to the lab to check on students so students are free to make their own working arrangements which I think is great for work-life balance. But of course students should report their progress regularly.

## Expectations for PhD Students
He has realistic expectations for his students, and managed to keep up with students' individual progress despite his busy schedule. Also is pretty observant and understands students' strengths and weaknesses, and provide appropriate guidance based on students' interests. Trains students to not only be good at research but also have good communication skills, teamwork, etc. Oftentimes he would directly point out students' mistakes if they made any (some people might find his choice of words offensive, but I dont think he meant to attack them personally). 

## Funding & Support
Very supportive. Will share to students if there are any fundings or scholarships available and use fundings to procure equipments for the lab. 

## Research
Knowledgeable about interdisciplinary fields in chemistry, biology, materials science and AI, I always learn lots during our discussions. Has good connections with other researchers and is keen to liaise to help with your research.

## Lab Culture
Pretty chill. Students are encouraged to talk to each other and everyone is nice and friendly.

Professor Su possesses exceptional academic expertise and maintains high standards of academic and professional ethics. He is very patient when guiding students in their research, listening attentively to their questions and ideas. Instead of simply providing answers, he encourages students to think independently and develop their own insights and solutions. Additionally, he understands the needs and goals of his students, offering personalized guidance to help them find the development path that best suits them.

## Expectations for PhD Students
Pay great attention to fostering the spirit of innovation and independent thinking. While expecting students to work hard, Prof Su opts for flexible working hours, and does not push students.

Research funding is fully supported, and students are encouraged and supported to participate in academic exchanges and collaborations.

## Research
I have utmost respect for Professor Su's academic prowess, publishing lots of papers on top journals. His lifelong passion is immersed in literature. With a broad knowledge base, sharp intellect, and exceptional foundation in mathematics and physics, he possesses divergent thinking. Following Professor Su's guidance, one can learn things even the teacher may not fully comprehend.

## 导师的指导风格
苏老师的指导风格非常轻松，对于好的同学，他会充分给予他们充足的空间发挥他们自己，并且也会仔细倾听同学们的idea；对于一般的同学，他也会为其指明idea并密切关注同学们的最新进展。组里的学生很多，苏老师也会对不同风格和背景的学生因材施教，并对学生自身的特点进行针对性的指导。对于学生的困惑，苏老师也会尽量为其解答。
## 对博士生的要求
苏老师对博士生的要求我认为也是作为博士生最基本的要求：按时参加组会，按时汇报工作等。并没有要求每天去实验室打卡什么的，而是自己的时间可以自己支配，因为苏老师更看重学生的学习成果。同时苏老师希望学生在几年的指导下有自己的思维见解、批判能力、组织领导能力等，这也是对学生除了学术能力之外全方位的培养，对学生将来的发展大有裨益。同时，只要满足学校要求，study leave等年假机会可以保证，并不会像有些组里一样不放学生走。
## 经费和支持
组里的经费支持非常充足，算力等也能满足学生们的研究。如果同学有要求的话，组里也可以支持学生购买新设备。
## 科研
苏老师手里目前有三个大的研究方向：过渡金属催化、材料研究以及病毒基因序列研究。三个小组的组会都是独立的，互不影响。三个小组都或多或少地和AI挂钩，对于不想做传统wet lab而想接触新型化学的同学来说是个很不错的选择。
## 实验室氛围
个人认为实验室氛围不错，组里的同学们都能互帮互助，不会让人有孤独无助的感觉。至于有同学抱怨什么组里没有统一的团建活动什么的，我认为是不同导师安排或者风格的不一样，并不能因此贴上“组里氛围压抑”的标签。科大很多老师平常都很忙碌，也不见得每个导师有那么多时间带学生出去游玩。总之，苏老师这边的实验室氛围还是蛮好的。

苏老师平时生活里很幽默，天南海北的事情都会和学生分享，当学生有压力的时候，可以随时去找苏老师，也会为学生排忧解难。在讨论科研问题时，苏老师的治学态度很严谨，经常一针见血的指出关键问题所在，并给出建议和方向。组里的学生很多，苏老师也是因材施教，会结合学生自身的特点和职业规划给予指导，不论学生想去企业还是高校，苏老师都会分享自己的见解，针对性的提供帮助。

## Expectations for PhD Students
苏老师对学生的要求其实不仅仅是发几篇文章就行，而是要有自身完善的方法论，缜密的逻辑思维，批判能力以及领导力，这些要求其实对于学生毕业以后走上社会是真正有帮助的。

组里经费很充足，算力也完全足够支持我们的研究，也支持学生购买与自己科研相关的设备。

## 导师的指导风格
苏老师为人和谐幽默，态度非常友善和蔼，妥妥的长者和学者风范，在我跟着他做博后的三年时间里（差不多十年前了），一直都非常有耐心地指导我的研究工作，关心我的生活，即使项目进展不顺利，也从没有对我们说过难听的话，总是循循善诱，耐心指导，绝对是一位值得信赖的好导师。

## 对博士生的要求
苏老师的学术水平很高，对博士生的期望自然也高，但他是一位很nice的导师，很有包容心和忍耐力，对学生的管理很人性化，三年期间，我从没见过他对学生发脾气，他总是笑呵呵的。

## 经费和支持
我在苏老师组里工作的时候，他的科研经费很充足，我想买什么仪器或材料，他都会支持。

## 科研
苏老师的科研水平很高，研究成果丰硕 ，Nature子刊经常发，而且跟国际上很多顶级实验室都有合作。

## 实验室氛围
实验室氛围很好，很和谐。

## Advisor Style & Mentorship
- Frequently calls students stupid.
- Speaks poorly about team members behind their backs.
- Criticizes other professors, even those working with hime. "HE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT THIS"
- Sometimes calls students to his office to discuss work but then makes inappropriate comments about other people like their appearance look funny.
- Politely asks students to help move things in his office and home.
- Expects students to be in the research lab on Sundays.
- During the Hong Kong protests, persuaded nonlocal students to stay at Hong Kong instead of flying back.
- Since 2018, five students have downgraded from the PhD program to MPhil.

## Expectations for PhD Students
- Required to be in the lab on Sundays.
- Should not visiting home if you're lazy, even during events like protests or the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Expected to write proposals for him, often requiring full-time effort during proposal periods, which last like 3 months, leaving no time for their own research. However, these proposals are often related to their research, so win-win.

## Funding & Support
- In the first two years after forming the group, he only visited to move furniture most of the time.
-  If your research is in Chemistry, other professors in the field that he working with might help you, but not him.
- Writing proposals for him might earn his fund support, but after four years and when university funding runs out, he claims to be unable to support you financially even the proposal brought him fund.
- Occasionally treats students food and drink but also suggests they should treat him.

## Research
- Proficient in multiple fields including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, AI, and Big Data.
- Has many papers with his name listed as the second last author.

## Lab Culture
- Work hard die fast
- There is no established lab culture, only his personal approach.
- One student required mental health counseling during their final year under his supervision.

: There are so many professors to choose from for a PhD. But choosing this one is definitely a mistake. My advice is to decline the offer from him and find a better mentor where you can learn how to do science. Doing science itself is difficult, and having an unsupportive PI will make it the worst experience. You may learn how to handle a bad boss, but that is definitely not something you want to spend more than four years on. HKUST has many other talented professors with a better personality.

## 导师的指导风格
相对而言比较随意的风格，主打一个有弹性，会为学生指明研究的大方向但也需要学生自己为自己的科研成果努力，是期望学生形成自己的研究体系而不是仅仅做他要求的。而在这种偏向于放养的情况下，如果学生感到迷茫也可以主动找他谈话获得他的建议。

## 对博士生的要求
随意的风格不代表要求低，博士生最好是有独自或是协调团队来深耕项目的能力。每周一次的组会不能稀里糊涂的混过去， 需要拿出符合一周工作量的进展。

## 经费和支持
经费大多来自学校和外部的科研基金支持，实验室的器材和电脑之类的提出要求后都能满足。在科大整体比较完整的研究支持体系中，正常情况下不会出现不够的情况。

## 科研
科研的广度和深度都在线，他时常给学生分发最新的相关领域的论文，和其他研究团队合作以了解相关领域的进展情况。现在带领的几个研究团队有主攻材料方面，也有生物方向的， 以及有结合最新的AI人工智能科技做有机化学方面的研究。

## 实验室氛围
整体的氛围都很轻松，组里大家互相关系都很好，没有那种破坏气氛的人。导师本人可能因为他本身工作比较忙吧，倒是比较少举办或参与组里的活动，偶尔会参加化学系里主持的活动。

## 非常主观偏执以及不负责任的指导风格
**缺少对人的基本尊重**，具体表现为：
*  **区别对待学生** 根据学生的背景（物理水平的高低）以及表达能力的强弱（presentation的水平）来给学生贴标签，大部分学生会被贴上负面的标签，然后无论学生说什么他总是倾向于质疑和不屑，从而禁止学生有任何自己的想法，只需要成为他的算力就够了。
* **言语辱骂** 组会上Pre表现不好的时候，ppt内容发现错误的时候，当TA发错邮件的时候，他会发很大脾气，然后人身攻击，常用的词语有stupid, shit, trash, waste of my time, idot.
* **背后说坏话**	经常在同学A（或者一堆同学面前）说B的坏话，A与B可以是组里的任何同学。比如说在说完B的坏话后，他会强迫性发问A，问A是否同意自己对B的点评(主要是人身攻击)，然后发出很轻蔑的笑容。他通过贬低别人来获得自己的成就高， 来表明自己是这个课题组地位最高的人。
* **不尊重学生的时间**，经常（故意）在周末以及节假日前夕跟你说要抓紧进度，以及经常（故意）在周末要meeting，导致周末经常不敢有自己的安排。也因为此，加上新冠的原因，组里两年多没有人请过一天假，因为他的push，大家都不敢提请假回家的事情。（我在2021年5月份斗胆提过一次回家，他说系里的规定是21天假，我可以回去。但其实我已经跟他说了回大陆隔离就要21天，我也说了我隔离的时候可以照常工作参加组会，因为我们组是纯理论计算组，也就是说完全不会影响工作进度的，我就说能不能多一周假，我就回一周，我想回去见我父母。他显然很不高兴，而且他要这样说我就确实没法回家了。）
* **傲慢虚伪**，对别的课题组（尤其是实验组）持有鄙视心态，对大部分论文嗤之以鼻，但事实上他自己没有做出来什么很不得了的工作，但是在别的老师面前会装作很尊重别人。
* **不关心学生的心理状态** 会在组会上把学生骂哭，从来也不会关心学生的心理状态，只需要学生能完成工作就可以。对一些本科生也是非常苛刻，用尽一切去压榨学生的劳动力。

**教学水平差**
* 他教的 物理化学 和 物理化学中的数学方法 评分非常低，因为他上课并不是为了教给学生知识，他只是想完成任务并且不想被学生抱怨。所以他的策略是把课程内容简化，上课内容和期中考试都非常简单（期末会埋伏他们一手以拉开差距），给分都尽可能给高。但这也改变不了他是一个很糟糕的老师的事实，他上课基本就是念ppt，解题就是硬解，很少有生动的讲解。至于ppt都是我们PhD学生做的，他又会有很多要求让你改来改去，每周要花很多时间。
* 科研上也是，他自己的讲解能力很差，英语也不太好，讲东西的时候总是“This and this, you get this, understand?”，很难搞懂他的意思。但是他会因为你听不懂而发火，然后说你stupid。

**过于情绪化**
* 组会经常会陷入到他发泄情绪的死循环中，他会不停的输出情绪言语攻击，导致很难实现真正有效的沟通。
* 时常跑火车说大话画大饼，经常性的讨论中，只有30%的时间是真正有些的，大部分时间在听他吹牛讲故事和diss别人。

好的一面：
**幽默** 他心情好的时候会经常笑，讲笑话，很幽默。大部分学生会被他的这一面吸引，但不知道他发火的时候。
**尊重学生的宗教信仰** 组里有过很多穆斯林同学，他们每天需要祷告很多次，如果祷告时间在组会期间，也是以他们的祷告为主。
**工作时间自由** 没有要求上下班打卡时间，可以随时睡懒觉熬夜。但是代价就是上班和下班没有明确的界限，休息时间也常常会收到他的消息，会时刻精神紧绷。
**给好学生有较大的自由发挥空间** 我自己很有幸被贴上了很多很好的标签，对我比较信任，让我管理师弟以及本科生。对于科研上的方向会跟我讨论，很多地方也是我自己在领导课题。会给我发一些很有意思的文章让我学习，然后讲给他听，在这个过程中自己的能力得到很大提升。但是代价是科研实际进展不算快，也没有特别明确的方向。

综上所述，该导师是一位比较主观且偏心的老师，并不是所有学生都适合他的课题组。如果你很自信，很善于谈吐，很善于安抚上级的情绪，并且随时可以跟上级一起吐槽其他同事，附和他说的一些并不高雅的笑话，最重要的是，有强大的心态和科研能力，那么你可能会适合他。

## 对博士生的要求
对他认为的好学生要求是：独立自主，自己有自己的理解，但是大方向上要听他的。有很强的理解和表达能力，能很清晰的讲解问题，能带领团队，写文章和proposal。
对他认为的坏学生要求是：不要有自己的想法，只需要完成他布置的任务，组会上只需要放出slides，甚至不需要说话，成为一个计算机器就是最好的。

## 经费和支持
毕业年限内是正常的全奖支持，超出毕业年限的（香港PhD规定是4年，而实际上延毕是很常有的）一律不会资助。也就是说延毕的都不会资助，本人自己在第三年转成MPhil，因为超出了正常毕业年限（MPhil是两年），从而失去了Scholarship，而香港的消费很高，所以我遇到了一些经济问题。向他求助无果，但是学校里给了我一笔资助，之后很顺利的完成的毕业事宜。
至于毕业后的支持，可能是因为我转成硕士而后又申请PhD激怒了他，我发给他两次的关于推荐信的询问都被他无视了，大概是不愿意推荐我再继续申请PhD。

## 科研
他本身是做材料计算出身的，Postdoc在Caltech，这方面的水平肯定是不差的。但是由于他自己带学生的风格问题，很难看到学生有比较好的工作。
不过他最近开始沉迷于生物系统，虽然他自己并不是特别懂这个领域，但他有一股迷之自信和傲慢，所以这方面的科研上我极其不推荐他。他会瞎指挥然后左右横跳，很容易最后什么成果也没有。我的论文至今还在bioRxiv，可能很难再投出去了，当时初稿写完，他在通讯作者里加了他弟弟的名字（大陆某五线城市的中医院医生），我不好意思硬刚，他说他弟弟通过电话与他参与过讨论，但是这件事情让我很膈应。然后就是圣诞节元旦除夕春节都在发微信push进度，大年初四开组会把本科生骂哭了，初五我就决定转成硕士毕业了。

## 实验室氛围
比较压抑。从来没有实验室聚餐或者任何活动，不过大家在不喜欢他这一点上都很一致。他在HKUST前两届总共收了八个学生，其中五个都转成了MPhil毕业了。留下的同学都是材料计算领域，大概也都发了文章，所以我也不能说完全做不出来东西（但这绝不是友好的体验），我只能说他不适合带学生去做生物体系的科研。

: 他甚至不觉得在公共场合称他的学生愚蠢是羞耻的。对于专业水平，你可以在科大找到真正具有领域知识的更好教授。如果你花时间在他手下学习，你就会发现他说的都是废话
