Advisor Style & Mentorship

There are weekly meetings to discuss updates in the group and then go into technical sessions with each student if necessary. Always listens to ideas and encourages students. Up to date with literature, although the expectation is that each student knows their topic and task best.

Expectations for PhD Students

Be up to date with literature and work towards the end goal of the project, but is not micromanaging how this happens. Generally the expectation is that the student takes the lead (particularly after the 1st year).

Funding & Support

Funding in the UK in general means that proposals need to be made for conferences etc. But there is infrastructure in the group to run mid-level and some large scale experiments.

Research

The quality of research produced by the group is high and it certainly helps that everyone is up to date.

Lab Culture

There is a collaborative sentiment in the group. There is no competition and people are in fact encouraged to discuss things openly, which in fact increases everyone's level.
