## Advisor Style & Mentorship
Meet as group every week, 1on1 every other week, always accessible via email and willing to meet whenever requested. Hands off mostly but checks on progress often. Emails returned within a day. 

## Expectations for PhD Students
Paper requirement is student specific. Ranges from 3-5 average. Reasonable about taking time off, but expects significant time spent on research. Not unreasonable, doesn’t expect late hours or weekends (unless weekdays are days off). PhD students graduate in as early as 4 years and as late as 8. Group average is probably 6 years. Department average is probably 5 (unsure about that). 

## Funding & Support
PI encourages students to find their own funding via fellowships/grants, but also writes own grant proposals to fund student(s) via grant. Very actively nominating students for fellowships. Very actively finding TA opportunities for students. 100% of students in lab funded via fellowship, grant, or TAship. Very supportive of international students and Visa problems, many students are of international status. 

## Research
Members interact very frequently, in busy lab or in meeting. But also outside of lab, occasionally for a meal or drink or someone hosting holidays. Students have “dropped” but only to switch to a lab with a completely different field of interest because PI did not have project to match student’s interest. PI very supportive of those switches. PI encourages students to intern in summer if intern is valuable to student’s career progress, and in turn PI understands PhD may take longer because of internships. 

## Lab Culture
PI definitely expert in niche field of morphology-guided synthesis of inorganics. Research is of very low TRL. Research doesn’t feel groundbreaking, but is contributing to field. Research topic remains consistent for most students. PI gives projects to students IF student doesn’t present their own ideas. Regardless of who chose the project, student has considerable freedom in direction of project. PI gives students multiple smaller projects after 2ish years so that student can publish more and learn more. PI very honest and appropriately credits contributing members. 

## Additional Information
PI very knowledgeable of all the red tape in the department/university, the signatures needed, the forms to fill, etc. Our lab was one of first to be allowed to return to lab during COVID because PI quickly submitted all necessary documents and set up required cleaning stations and scheduling system and maintained department guidelines.

: Another tips for all potential students: check the current member profile (linkedin, researchgate or whatever) and try to find out how many years they have been in the same place.
